Avalanche Lily

or Yellow Glacier Lily

Secwepemc name: scwicw

Produces elongated “bear tooth” like edible bulbs that have been an important root vegetable for Secwepemc and other

Interior Plateau peoples for countless generations. Highly adaptable, scwicw is found at relatively low elevations but most common in upper-elevation meadows throughout much of the territory. It was formerly harvested in large quantities, usually by women, using digging sticks. Harvesters removed the small appendages on the bulbs and replanted them, only the largest bulbs were harvested, dried and pit cooked.  Cooked bulbs are nutritionally comparable to peeled baked potato and baked sweet potato.
